Confused about what's going on at the Capitol? Check out our Special Session FAQs

Dear Friend,

The legislative Special Session, called by Gov. Mary Fallin to deal with the loss of tobacco funds struck down by the Oklahoma Supreme Court, is now at the end of its third week, but there is still no agreement on how to fix the budget.

Even those paying close attention are having a hard time following what's happening — and what's not happening — in special session. To help you understand the process and the possible outcomes, OK Policy has published answers to a set of Frequently Asked Questions. The questions include:

  • Why is the Legislature in special session?
  • What issues can be addressed in special session?
  • How long will special session last?
  • What has happened so far in special session?
  • What are the possible outcomes of the special session?
  • What happens while the Capitol is shut down?
  • How much does special session cost?
  • What can I do to have an impact on special session?

You can also see a video update on Facebook about what's going on in special session from OK Policy and Together Oklahoma's outreach and advocacy coordinator KJ McKee.

How You Can Have an Impact on Special Session

We encourage you to contact your own two legislators, the House Speaker, the Senate President Pro Tem, and the Governor to insist that they use Special Session to find the new recurring revenues needed to avert deeper cuts, invest in key priorities, and put the budget on a sustainable path. You can find all the resources you need from the advocacy alert on OK Policy’s website and from Together Oklahoma.

The state Capitol will be closed beginning Friday evening, October 13 through Sunday, October 22 while crews replace the building’s electrical system. The shutdown will limit legislators' email and phone access, so we encourage you to make calls and send emails today!

Thanks!
