Dear Friend, Thousands of people now sit in our jails, sometimes for months before trial, simply because they’re unable to find the money to buy their freedom from a bail bond agent. This session legislators have a chance to correct that. SB 252, authored by Sen. Roger Thompson and Rep. Chris Kannady, will help end pretrial detention for people accused of misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies. Time behind bars can result in lost jobs, lost housing, and child custody issues. SB 252 would let them return to their jobs and families. Please call these key legislators on the House conference committee and ask them to vote YES to SB 252.
Pre-trial detention should be limited to those who represent a serious flight risk or who pose a threat to public safety. Ask these legislators to vote yes on SB 252 and end debtors’ jails in Oklahoma. For more information on bail reform, visit our fact sheet. Together we can make a difference, Sabine Brown
