SPI is on Hiatus This Year - But the Important Work Remains

Dear Friend,

Thank you so much for your support of OK Policy’s Oklahoma Summer Policy Institute, which for the past eight years has served as a launching pad for college students and recent graduates interested in public policy.  While Oklahoma has continued to reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, OK Policy is committed to ensuring health, safety, equity, and wellness for everyone involved in Oklahoma Summer Policy Institute, including staff at the host event venues. With this commitment in mind, we have made the decision to put the Summer Policy Institute on hiatus for 2020.

The Oklahoma Summer Policy Institute social night traditionally has served as a great way to introduce new leaders to our state’s policy issues, as well as connecting them with our alumni community along with friends and supporters such as yourselves. To help fill this gap, we have reimagined some of the SPI panels and presentations to develop public education webinars and policy discussions to take place this fall. We will also host some private donor discussions with our policy team and our new Executive Director Ahniwake Rose throughout the end of the year. Please watch your inbox for dates and registration information.

SUPPORT OUR WORK

 Even though our Oklahoma Summer Policy Institute will not take place this summer, we are working harder than ever to provide the data-driven policy solutions, policy education, and issue advocacy. Oklahoma has long struggled to provide assistance and support for our most vulnerable citizens, but the pandemic has made things worse, especially for our low-income residents and our communities of color. Our team quickly pivoted our planned work to address issues that arose during the pandemic working to:

  • Protect the rights for Oklahomans to vote safely and securely;
  • Ensure every Oklahoman is counted in the 2020 Census;
  • Secure health care coverage through Medicaid expansion, including organizing more than 2,600 Oklahomans to speak out against a bad health care proposal;
  • Organize a coalition from across the political spectrum to address public safety risks that could stem from a virus outbreak in our justice system;
  • Promote sensible childcare policies that support Oklahoma families and child care providers;
  • Call much-needed attention to the growing eviction crisis that threatens to force Oklahoma families from their homes; and
  • Elevate the need for statewide, coordinated measures to help reduce the virus’ spread.

Simply put, we’ve been battling bad policy and bad data on nearly every front for the past four months during this public health crisis. As a result, your continued support of our work is more crucial than ever. We hope you can donate today. With a generous match from the Sandler Foundation, your donation will go even further! Thank you for your continued investment in OK Policy. Your interest and continued support are votes of confidence that we are working toward a better future for our state!

All the best,
