Advocacy Alert: Calls Needed Today to Protect Oklahomans' Health Care

Together Oklahoma

Oklahoma lawmakers will be taking a key vote this week on Gov. Stitt’s proposed Medicaid alternative plan, which is untested and will face lengthy legal challenges.

We are asking you to call your legislators today and tell them that the Governor’s plan isn't the right solution for Oklahoma. Instead, the Governor should respect the wishes of more than 300,000 Oklahomans and set a date for State Question 802, which includes straightforward Medicaid expansion.

How to Reach Your Legislator

Background

  • The Governor hasn’t released important information about his proposed plan, including what it would cost or how Oklahomans would get and keep their health care. There’s not even a bill number yet.

  • We don’t know enough about the Governor’s plan, but what we do know is that it will leave federal money on the table, put Oklahomans’ health at risk, and trigger lawsuits.

  • The Governor’s Medicaid alternative plan has not been tried anywhere else, so this potentially uses Oklahomans as guinea pigs for a new federal Medicaid option. Oklahomans’ health shouldn’t be treated as a political experiment.

  • This alternative plan contains elements such as block grants and work requirements, which have resulted in lengthy, expensive lawsuits for other states that have tried these approaches. The proposed plan’s block grant approach could force dangerous coverage cuts during the next economic downturn.

  • A record number of Oklahomans have demanded to have their voice heard on straightforward Medicaid expansion as outlined in State Question 802. This is the only tried and true path to providing health care coverage for our friends and neighbors but the Governor’s office has delayed setting an election date as he puts forward his alternative.

The Legislature has had nearly a decade to find a way to expand Medicaid in Oklahoma. Please let your elected representatives hear your voice to let them know that Oklahomans deserve better than a hastily assembled plan that invites costly lawsuits and endangers lives.
