Members of the Oklahoma House's County and Municipal Government Policy Committee this week will vote on SB 484 that would make it nearly impossible for cities to build homeless shelters.

Subscribe to get updates from Together OK and Oklahoma Policy Institute Members of the Oklahoma House's County and Municipal Government Policy Committee this week will vote on a bill that would make it nearly impossible for cities to build homeless shelters.   Under SB 484, cities except Oklahoma City and Tulsa would be prohibited from building homeless shelters within 3,000 feet of any school.   SB 484 is scheduled to be heard in committee on Wednesday, April 9, in the County and Municipal Government Policy Committee.  EMAIL LAWMAKERS TODAY Key Issues SB 484 would prohibit homeless shelters from being built anywhere but the most rural outskirts of town, far from the services  that people experiencing homelessness need to get back on their feet. Homelessness is on the rise. Further limiting services that help people secure housing is the exact opposite of what the state should be doing. SB 484 would require homeless shelters to be further from schools and daycares than is currently required for registered sex offenders. The best way to combat homelessness is to help people secure housing. Instead, SB 484 would create even more barriers to a safe and stable home.
